Leadership Howard County enlightens and empowers leaders through our programs to learn more about our community and to take an informed and active role in influencing and shaping the future of Howard County along with other leaders in business, government, education and nonprofits. Graduates of our Leadership Premier program for established professionals are found at every level of leadership in our community and are the individuals shaping policy and outstanding business practices and growth. More that 50 percent of the county’s nonprofit organizations have LHC graduates sitting on their boards and leading their organizations.

You will learn about how the county operates and get to know firsthand those decision-makers guiding our future. There is no other place in a relatively short period of time to access this knowledge in Howard County and be able to claim a highly respected place at the table of community organizations with other recognized leaders.

“As a lifelong resident of Howard County, I thought I knew everything there was to know about my community. But I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know until I went through the Leadership program – it really opened my eyes to many issues and challenges throughout the county and really shaped my effectiveness to lead as County Executive.”

– Maryland State Senator James Robey, Class of 1987, former Howard County Police Chief and County Executive

Leadership Alumni Programs

The real application of Leadership Howard County activity begins as a graduate of one of the LHC programs and engagement in the rich agenda of continuing programs. General membership events present opportunities to hear outstanding speakers on leadership-relate topics, participate in the discussion of critical issues facing the county, network and connect with other LHC graduates and county leaders, participate in service projects, serve on a committee and just have fun. These Alumni Programs will strength your network and circle of influence, as well as add to your knowledge base and business acuity.

Community Impact Projects – due Sept 21

An important component of both the Leadership Premier and Essentials programs is the Community Impact Project (CIP). Program participants work together in teams with a host organization on a consultant basis, addressing an organizational challenge or strategic issue. To date, over 100 organizations have benefited from a Leadership CIP team!

A Community Impact Project is identified by a host organization – typically a nonprofit organization or government entity. The host organization identifies an issue or challenge it is facing. Class participants research and propose creative, sustainable solutions. This experience is designed to be a beneficial experience not only for the organization but for our participants as well. This helps them gain a better understanding of community needs and a deeper appreciation for community involvement.
