Testimonials

Gail Bates
State Delegate
Maryland House of Delegates
Annapolis, MD

As a member of the Maryland House of Delegates I credit LHC with giving me a broad understanding of how government departments and private entities cooperate to make Howard County the best county in our state.

Mary Schiller
Manager, Partnerships Office
Howard County Public School System

Although I started Leadership Howard County with a good familiarity of the organizations making up the county, LHC took my understanding to a whole new level. Since graduating, I have been in contact with many of my classmates as well as the professionals who presented to us throughout the year.  Leadership Howard County gave me the opportunity to develop many wonderful friendships and I look forward to continuing our work together to build a stronger Howard County.

Get Involved

Leadership Howard County was set in motion in 1985 with a vision to become a critical force in preparing and inspiring senior level leaders in Howard County.  Since its inception, LHC has evolved into a comprehensive approach – challenging youth, emerging leaders and senior level professionals to strengthen and transform our community.

Graduates commit to using their experience for the long-term benefit of our community.  They have learned about community issues, leadership skills and how to tap into vital resources.  With this knowledge, many graduates serve on nonprofit and community boards and committees where their interests, talents and resources can best be used.

Taking one of Leadership Howard County’s programs is just the beginning of engaging in LHC and the community.  LHC offers many opportunities for continuing your enthusiasm for being involved and giving back on many levels and in ways that resonate with LHC graduates.  Review the following choices and click on the links for greater detail and next steps.

General Membership Events and Activities: Stay connected with your classmates and colleagues by attending speaker forums, panel discussions and other events throughout the year that are designed to keep you engaged with a network of active community leaders and enrich your community leadership experience.

Volunteer with our Youth Programs - Leadership U is a unique program for high school juniors to build leadership skills and make an impact on the community. Many volunteers are needed to ensure this program continues to deliver challenging and excellent opportunities for the students. From mentors who assist with community service projects, Shadow Day hosts, or committee volunteers, there are many ways to give back and ensure we pass on the lessons of leadership to a new generation. Visit the Leadership U page for more information or contact Diane Freedman, LU Director of Youth Programs.

Community Impact Projects

Leadership Howard County seeks Community Impact Projects for both the Leadership Premier and Leadership Essentials Programs each year.

Community Impact Projects are designed to be a mutually beneficial experience for the organization and our participants. Our participants consult with organizations in order to tackle an identified problem or address an issue. Organizations benefit from the talents, skills, and professional capabilities of our participants. In turn, our class members have an opportunity to gain a better understanding of community needs, connect with a specific organization and build leadership skills outside of their workplace.

These projects will have a meaningful impact on the organization and ultimately the community, and therefore should be real-life, significant projects. Leadership teams consist of 6 to 7 class members who work together to deliver a product to the sponsoring organization. Leadership Premier projects take place from September to April; Leadership Essentials take place from February to May.
