Leadership Howard County will hold its annual Big Event featuring guest speaker Liz Murray, who will present her keynote speech “Homeless to Harvard.” Murray, a Harvard graduate who experienced homelessness as a teen, will share how she overcame her childhood obstacles and transformed her life to inspire others.

The Big Event brings together more than 400 leaders from business, government and nonprofit organizations in Howard County. Proceeds from the event support Leadership Howard County programs and scholarships.

When?                 Tuesday, April, 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Where?                Turf Valley Resort, 2700 Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City

Murray grew up in the Bronx with drug-addicted parents and became homeless at age 15. Despite these setbacks, Murray chose to focus on her education as a vehicle to create a brighter future. Her dedication helped her earn her high school diploma in only two years and win a scholarship to Harvard, where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in 2009.

Murray was the subject of the 2003 Lifetime Television film “Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story” and published her bestselling memoir “Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard” in 2010. As an inspirational speaker, she has spoken to groups on the power of courage, overcoming challenges and personal growth.

M&T Bank is the presenting sponsor of The Big Event. Through March 22, general admission tickets cost $100 and $75 for students, veterans and employees of small nonprofit organizations. Beginning March 23, all tickets will be $125. To register or learn more, visit www.leadershiphc.org or call 410-730-4474.
